چکیده

Motivated by observations in the Norwegian airline industry in the late 90s, we develop a semicollusive model with collusion on gross prices and competition on contracts for large customers (corporate contracts). The theoretical predictions are tested on detailed data on gross prices, large customer prices and quantities in the Norwegian airline industry in the period 1998-2001. We control for cost and demand factors as well as route specific heterogeneity, and find results in line with what our theory model predicts. An increase in the share of large customers and their rebates increase businessand leisure prices for passengers not travelling on these contracts, leading to a perverse price structure with an excessive high price for those consumers that are expected to be the most price sensitive ones. The effect is most pronounced in the business class. The effect is found to differ according to the quality (number of flights) the airline companies can offer. 1 We are indebted to the Norwegian Research Council for financial support through the project ‘Improving Competition Policy’ at SNF.

Collude, Compete, or Both? Deregulation in the Norwegian Airline Industry

The purpose of this paper is to test the nature of competition concerning price and capacity setting in the Norwegian airline industry after the deregulation in 1994. Did the two airlines, SAS and Braathens, compete on prices and capacities (competition), collude on prices and capacities (collusion) or collude on prices and compete on capacities (semicollusion)? We reject the hypothesis that th...

Disadvantageous semicollusion

Standard analysis in industrial organization indicates that firms earn higher profits if they collude rather than compete on prices (or quantities). However, firms choose other strategic variables, such as investment in capacity or R&D, in addition to choosing prices or production levels. Thus the overall evaluation of product market collusion must take into account its effect on the interactio...

Bankruptcy and Product-Market Competition: Evidence from the Airline Industry∗

Classical models of product market competition maintain that firms maximize their profits regardless of their financial condition. Yet over the last two decades a growing theoretical literature has examined whether a firm’s capital structure impacts competition in the market for the firm’s products. In this paper we ask whether a firm operating under bankruptcy protection significantly reshapes...

Incumbent Response to Entry by Low - Cost Carriers in the U . S . Airline Industry ∗ Kerry

This paper studies incumbent price response to entry by low-cost carriers in the U.S. airline industry. I find that legacy carrier incumbents decrease their mean airfare, 10th percentile airfare, and 90th percentile airfare following entry by a low-cost carrier. Airfares decrease by a larger percentage at the right tail of the incumbents’ price distribution than at the left tail, suggesting tha...

Does Price Matter? Price and Non-Price Competition in the Airline Industry

This paper studies passengers’ choice behavior in air travel. Products are defined as a unique combination of airline and flight itinerary while markets are defined as a directional round-trip air travel between an origin and a destination city. A structural econometric model is used to investigate the relative importance of price (airfare) and non-price product characteristics in explaining pa...
